Reader by the time you are seeing this……………..I’m about to close out my 2024 political obligations: phone banking, post carding and donating to PACS and candidates and watch parties. Oh the watch parties! Close nit friends or strangers who are sure to become friends (Calhoun County Democrats). This year an event where you realize that your candidate of choice may not be making it onto the ticket as the nominee at all. Quiting was something I told myself I’d do by August 1st anyway. Just to get back to the life I’ve left behind. You know, the one where you seek love. Seek art. Seek just doing things for yourself. By now most everyone knows one candidate almost got shot to death. The other vascilates between being presentable one public appearance and incoherent and senile the next. It’s certainly enough to want to throw in the towel. The party that has sought to divide the county is more unified than the one that stands for unity. Cats and dogs are sleeping together now, if I understand things right. Some how we press on with the voter turnout acitivities with which we engage.
Regarding both the Republican and Democratic nominees (Democratic one in mind only until the DNC’s convention in August) I had hilarious thoughts, analogies and predictions even up until driving to work this morning. The dynamic with Joe Biden and his unwillingness to relinquish his candidacy for president and how it will certainly ruin the Democratic party and basically our society for years to come can be crystalized no better than that scene from the updated version of the movie Vacation starring Christina Applegate and Ed Helms, where the Griswalds decide to go river rafting. Their raft guide played by Charlie Day, get’s a deflating phone call during his orientation session with the familty; from his fiance announcing she is dumping him. He cusses throwing his phone in the creek. He then loses all hope and goes on a ‘suicide mission.’ Unknowing to the Griswald’s is that he changes the course of their route down the creek to take him and the Griswald’s over a one hundred foot water fall to his and their demise by proxy. They finally see the falls ahead and jump out of the boat. Charlie’s character does not and goes over the falls to his death. With all the yelling out in agony it is apparent to the viewer that Day’s character realizes he made a mistake. I cannot think of a better analogy than what is going on within the Democratic National Committee now. Intelligent and informed politicians, donors and researchers know Joe Biden is more than likely going to lose in November, if he stays on course. He hangs on in unconscious denial of the polling dangers around him. Democrats everywhere are jumping off his raft and begging him to drop out and change course so our society does not completely go over the ‘falls of fascism.’ Biden’s girlfriend (all of us who want a decent chance to save democracy) has called and told him we need new life. He is throwing his phone in the water as Charlie did and pressing on, on a political suicide mission it out of spite.
Then there is Donald Trump. Which gave me a thought today. One that told me that in four years if he is our president he will be facing the same issues Biden is now, being only three years younger than Biden. I’m not saying his cognitive decline will be as accelarated (that’s up to so many factors unknow) but he won’t be like he is now. He’s not like he was the other two times he ran. He also has demonstrated mental fog and decline. What’s to say America is not in the same situation with him four years from now. The difference is……………..his cult like hold onto his supporters will be even harder to wrestle away and will ruin the Republican party even more (if that’s even possible). Whenever Donald Trump graduates from life for good, I feel there will be one last scam in memoriam. What if he sold a piece of himself, i.e. a section of his cremated ashes to former supporters for say $10,000. You heard that right. I don’t began to know or care what becomes of him when he leaves planet earth. Yet, I’m predicting here, before anyone else, that this is a stark possibility as one last grand grift on society, Donald Trump literally sells a part of himself to whoever is intellectually challenged enough to purchase. That’s right! You heard it here first. If I was a betting man, I’d say he does this as a parting gift to MAGA nation.
