If you are like me, a college football game is usually a great escape from all of the sociopolitical turmoil we experience most everyday now. In my case it was certainly a fantastic celebration of my past and present. Being that I graduated from UA, taught in their adult learning program just last September and now teach at UGA’s adult learning program a couple of times a year. Watching my two schools play last night was like watching your two children go out into the backyard and play pitch. You wanna’ really celebrate the occasion.
By now you know AL.com and Fox News let everyone know Trump visited Tuscaloosa last night. For AL.com it was news worthy because it was local so was sadly news worthy to the brain damaged portion of its readership. Probably making some of the reporters want to to throw up, by having to cover it. For Fox News it was vintage reporting emphasizing zero substance culture war drek for consumers who read at an eighth grade level. What wasn’t mentioned though was how a MAGA cultist named Ric Mayers potentially endangered thousands of fans by opening them up to a substantial terrorist threat. Its not like Iran is openly hostile to Donald Trump? Or even America for that matter?
Ric Mayers is the moron, who out of insecurity, wanted the state and I guess American college football fans to know: He and Trump are blood brothers! Ric is an oil executive from Vernon Alabama who is chummy with Trump according to an article in AL.com. So chummy that apparently he was introduced to his wife at Mar-a-Lago, where of course he got married to her in grand MAGA bliss. So chummy and dummy that he felt it necessary to bring him to an event that was already strained to the top concerning safety and transportation dynamics. Yet, I guess when you’re in a cult more important issues don’t matter. And hey, with this particular cultist’s invitation, the state of Alabama got to prove one more time it could lose for winning. In what was supposed to be a celebration of a new coach, two great universities, hard working student athletes and the act of fans coming together to leave politics behind for an afternoon the nation got to ‘celebrate’ a media op from three of the most inept senators in regards to consumer rights, ‘junior high home room’ programming and coverage from Fox, a sociopathic presidential candidate, and the head of the state’s Republican party who I hear is known to collect butterflies. With the fabulous viewing party being topped off by a visiting third senator from Montana. I’m assuming buffalo hunting season hasn’t started up there yet? And it made perfect sense I guess when it came to Alabama’s congressional representatives since they were primarily elected due to their connection to football. Eh, proof of legislative skill is not really needed when you’ve got pomp and circumstance to get you into office.
And who am I or are people like me to complain about a mindset that proves why Alabama is getting passed by Mississippi in some metrics, baked into a large portion of its constituency. Its not like the more visceral things in day to day life have to do with a productive, healthy and safe society. Reader, just remember what I write here when you go to the poles in five weeks. With one camp, its about meaningless optics. It always has been. With the other it comes down to imperfect, mind you, yet solid plans and values. Either one that endangers Alabama citizens or leaves them with banal fluff for their vote. Just like the reality Ric Mayers ‘graciously’ donated to football fans Saturday night. Or the other that actually cares about humanity. Alabama’s reputation won and lost all in the same night because of a few folks who never know how to win on things that matter and fumbled our reputation away. Let’s not fumble again at the polls.
